Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama announced that Joseph Biden Jr, Senator from Delaware was his Vice Presidential running mate early Saturday monrning in a text message to supporters. The selection was kept a tightly held secret until 2 days before the Democratic National Committee convention, which starts on Monday in Denver.
Biden was likely selected because of his ability to go on the offensive against an increasingly negative campaign run by John McCain. He will allow Obama the ability to stay more positive. Biden also brings foreign policy experience and appeal to working class Americans to the ticket. He has also occaisionally been somewhat outspoken, and has made statements that suggest he may have some difficulty adhering to the strict message disipline of the Obama campaing. Obama and Biden held a joint rally at the steps of the Illinois State House in Springfield on Saturday.
Meanwile, new polls showed McCain closing the gap on Thursday in national polls, and pulling slightly ahead with Nevada and Ohio switching to weak McCain. By Friday however polls showed Obama again pulling ahead in national tracking polls, and regaining a small lead in a Nevada poll, to pull to a 266 electoral vote tie, with Montana rated as a tossup. So we are essentially dead even on the eve of the DNC convention and the VP pick. Should be interesting to see how much of a bounce Obama gets from the convention.
